Our Coalfield School Story-Week of August 5th

The Coalfield School story continued this week as our students and staff spent their first full week learning routines, policy, and new faces. The first week of school is always a bit chaotic but our amazing staff and students help make this one very smooth.  Our awesome Vice Principal, Ms. Sheila Harvey, did a fantastic job communicating scheduling as she and I met with each grade level 6th-12th to discuss our mission, vision, and policies.  Our new SRO, officer Mike Kruggel, sat in on our meetings as well.  Officer Kruggel was everywhere this week helping staff and students on campus.  A huge shout out to new  Coalfield School Guidance counselor, Ms. Tiffany Deanne Thompson .  She has done super-human things to this school year.  I can’t even begin to imagine the number of hours she has put in to support staff and students at Coalfield.  Also, a huge thank you to Ms. Melissa Morales  for helping in the main office and the guidance office.  Ms.  ChrisandBrittany Garmon has also been a great help volunteering her time to help Ms. Susanne Hitchcock Pemberton get Chromebooks assigned to students.  Mr.  Kyle David Treece Jr. volunteered his time this week to spread wood chips on our playground and help Ms. Carmen Jackson Hines create an outdoor space for our staff to enjoy lunch together.  These are only a few of our Coalfield School family who have worked to make this a successful week.  I can’t recognize everyone individually in this post, but I can say I am so very grateful for our entire staff, volunteers, and student body.  I can also assure you that our staff is working hard to promote a safe and effective learning environment for our students.
Our volleyball and football coaches and players worked hard this week to prepare for games starting this month.  Our high school and middle school football teams have looked impressive in their scrimmages this past week.  Our volleyball teams continue to work hard despite the challenge of having the gym floor redone.  We expect to have the gym floor finished by the end of this coming week.  We also expect our football bleachers to be delivered Monday and installed by the end of the week.  We also received word this week that they could possibly break ground on our new STEM lab in October or November.  Needless to say, there is a lot of new things happening for our students and community.
We finished up our school improvement plan this week.  We have 3 goals our plan will revolve around.  We want to improve the number of students who are proficient in Reading/English and Language Arts, we want to improve the number of students who are proficient in Mathematics, and we want to continue to raise the percentage of students who are Ready Graduates.  We have already implemented some of the action steps that we submitted in our school improvement plan.  We have redone schedules in 4th -8th grade to allow for an additional 10 minutes of math and reading/ELA per day.  This will allow for an additional 50 minutes per week and an additional 30 hours per year of math and reading/ELA. With the addition of a 6th middle school teacher, added by the board mid-year last year, we were also able to reduce the number of plans or classes that our middle school math and Reading/ELA teachers are responsible for.  Be sure to set an alarm for 8:30AM each morning and join us in corporate prayer for our students, staff, and communities.
