The Coalfield School story was busy this week. Again, there will always be challenges that we will have to face, but I am truly thankful for all the good that we can acknowledge and look to for encouragement each week. That being said, I want to start our story with something one of our students did this past week that blessed me beyond measure. Jayden Owens one of our 3rd graders, did something this week that took a lot of courage. Jayden witnessed something being done to another student that he knew was not right and he simply intervened, in a positive way, to help stop it. As we all know, It is not an easy thing to interject yourself into a negative situation and do the right thing especially in a crowd of your peers. This courageous young man did just that! I am so proud of Jayden for being a positive influence in our school. His actions epitomized the One-Heartbeat culture we want to grow at Coalfield School.
Ms. Dee Dee Harrison Wallace, Ms. Shelia, and I got to meet with 7th-8th grade students this week to discuss their data and goals on I-Ready tests and TCAP testing. It has been a pleasure to sit down with our students individually and speak to them about their academic goals. We have now met individually with over 230 of our 3rd through 8th grade students.
Our 3rd-8th grade conducted a mock TCAP test on Monday. As we do in sports, we wanted to practice with our students so that we could coach them and help them feel more confident in their abilities. Teachers will use this practice to answer any questions or concerns students had about the types of questions/ problems/prompts students encountered on this practice exam.
Our Juniors took the ACT exam on Tuesday. Ms. Lauren Thais, Ms. Andrea Crane, and Ms. Carmen Jackson Hines proctored this exam for our students.
We hosted the Institute for learning Math Labs at our school this week. Teachers from across the district came to observe and have collaborate discussions surrounding the math lessons taught by Ms. Jenice Pearson and Ms. Jessica Neeley. Ms. Jenice and Ms. Jessica along with their students represented our school very well with a room full of observing educators. I am thankful for these ladies and their willingness to invite other educators into their classrooms to observe. Thank you ladies for going above and beyond giving of your time to prepare for this learning opportunity. Ms. Susan’s Pre-K students worked on a STEM project this week. They are designing and constructing leprechaun traps with the help of their parents and teachers. Our littles understand how clever the leprechaun is so they’ve had to think really hard, they’ve had to talk to other people, and they’ve had to work with other people to come up with a creative design to capture this sneaky leprechaun. To my knowledge, he has alluded capture thus far.🍀 🪤
Our Spring sports teams had a very busy week with a total of 10 games played this week. Our CMS softball ladies remained undefeated beating Oneida and collecting 2 wins over Sunbright. The CMS Baseball team split with Oneida. Our CHS Baseball guys collected 2 wins over Sunbright and defeated Oneida. Our CHS softball ladies fell to a very talented Oliver Springs and collected a win over Oakdale.
Coalfield School would like to thank Coach Ronnie Ron Wilson for all the time and energy he has given to our student-athletes as the Lady Jackets Head Basketball Coach the past several years. Coach Wilson has decided to step down as head coach but remain as an assistant coach. We appreciate you, Coach Ronnie Wilson!
With the retirement of Coach Wilson, Coalfield School has named Coach Josh Wright as the new head coach of the Lady Jackets basketball team. Coach Wright is a Coalfield alumni and will serve our school and our student-athletes well. Welcome home Coach Josh Wright and family.
One of our outstanding seniors, Carter Lowe, received word this week that he has been awarded a full scholarship to the University of Tennessee. Carter will also be our first middle college graduate at Coalfield. He will receive an Associate Degree from Roane State this Spring as well as a high school diploma. Congratulations Carter Lowe! This is a well deserved honor for a fantastic young man.
Another one of our outstanding students, Noah Hines, received word from our guidance office that he will be recognized by MTSU as one of their True Blue one hundred Tennessee high school freshmen students selected for character, academics, and community service. Noah will be attending a reception at MTSU in honor of his selection. Congratulations Noah Hines! A well deserved recognition!
Our SRO, Kenny Humphrey, had a cool ride delivered to him at school courtesy of Sheriff Wayne Potter and the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department. Oh yeah, it was Officer Humphrey’s birthday week as well. Nice birthday gift for him. The students and staff love it! Thank you Sheriff Wayne Potter!
