Our Coalfield School story continued this week with several challenges and some successes. Again, we will celebrate the good and continue to face the challenges.
Ms. Dee Dee Harrison Wallace, Ms. Shelia, and I got to meet with 3rd-6th grade students this week to discuss their data and goals on I-Ready tests and TCAP testing. It was such a great experience to sit down with our students individually and discuss academic goals with them. We will have a mock TCAP testing day on Monday. This is only a practice exam.
I wasn’t able to get into many classrooms this week due to the individual, academic meetings with students that I was helping Ms. Dee Dee and Ms. Shelia complete. However, I was able to observe Mr. Jones’ 8th grade STEM class. His students were preparing for their next project as they will be applying Newton’s 2nd law of motion, F=ma, as they build rockets 🚀. They have already been studying Newton’s laws of motion in a previous project that allowed them, using a constant force (co2 cartridges) to manipulate the mass of their dragsters, via a design process, to increase acceleration. They will continue their study with the rocket design focusing on a different aspect of Newton’s Law of motion. They will kick the PBL (project based learning) off by watching October Sky.
Ms. Casey Bass has worked very hard to gather and submit the things our students and staff are doing throughout our school in hopes of achieving STEM certification for a k-12 school.
Our awesome technology folk installed vape detectors in all of our bathrooms, our locker rooms, and our field house. The goal of the vape detectors is to help keep our students safe. We are doing all we can to hopefully cut down on this serious problem in our schools. Please help us by talking to your child about the dangers of vaping. Our school nurse, Ms. Hillary Swint Freytag, is working to arrange for health professionals to come in and help educate students on the harmful effects of vaping.
Our students and staff lined up in support of Izzy as she got to come home from the hospital on Friday. Her parents drove her by the school as students and staff shared some love with her.
Our CMS Lady Jackets had an impressive week on the diamond this week. They run-ruled Wartburg, Cherokee, and Oliver Springs this week to improve to 4-0 on the season.

Please continue to pray for our staff, students, and their families. Pray specifically for Izzy Blalock and her family. Also, please pray specifically for students as they prepare to test and when they test this spring on TNReady/EOCs and ACT.
