Our Coalfield Story-Week of February 26

Our Coalfield School story continued this week.  Ms. Jessica Lowe, with the help of other staff and community members, organized a benefit dinner to help the family of Izzy Blalock as they continue to battle the illness that has stricken this sweet student of ours. The dinner raised approximately $1000.00 to help the family.
Ms. Lauren Thais did a fantastic job of organizing and presenting to our sophomore students and their parents this week.  Students and parents learned about the different options that are available to them as they continue their educational journey at Coalfield.  Roane State Community College representatives were there to discuss dual enrollment and middle college options and requirements. Students also learned about TCAT opportunities from a representative as well.  Ms. Lauren discussed ready graduate requirements and Ms. Heather spoke to them about Upward Bound opportunities.  There was a great turnout for the event.  We appreciate all the parents and students who were able to participate.
Some neat things were happening in the classrooms I visited this week.  Mr. Mike Smith’s Physical Science class was actively learning as they were working together to develope Periodic Table children’s stories.  Ms. Jenn Tyl’s Algebra students were actively learning about graphing functions.  Ms. Watson’s Algebra students were also learning about graphing functions.  Ms. Watson’s honors math class was applying the fundamental counting principle to several scenarios presented to them. Mr. Dalton Roberts’ Psychology class was actively learning by completing a task to help them understand how memory functions. Ms. Christine Marks’ first grade was actively working together as they moved around the room to discuss strategically placed pictures related to their Sounds First reading curriculum. Ms. Dee Dee Harrison Wallace, Ms. Pamela Fears Lay, and Ms. Jessica Beck Stubbs shared a reward day with their students who “Leveled Up “ on their Lexia reading program. Ms. Kristi Jackson was providing direct instruction to her middle school math students using the IXL program.  It was race day on Friday for our middle school STEM students who designed and built dragsters.  Madison Jackson’s car got a little side ways causing a horrendous crash at the finish line. (See video)The winner was determined by a photo-finish…Maddie appealed the decision.  Both cars had major damage and needed repairs before continuing. STEM also continued their woodworking unit as they put the finishing touches on their creations. Mr.Lowe’s History students were engaged in a lesson discussing the Trail of Tears.  Mr. David C Snodgrass’ high school Music were learning how to recognize and read music symbols.  Ms. Medema’s business students continued to actively engage in the Hive coffee business learning to manage a business. Mr. David Hixson had his Spanish students actively engaged in reading and speaking Spanish to one another.
Last, but certainly not least, Andy Lowe sent one of his bucket trucks and some workers down to help us fix our flag display in front of the building.  We now have a new American flag and Tennessee flag gloriously waving in front of our school.
Please continue to pray for our school, students, staff, and their families.  Pray specifically for Izzy and her family.
